Don’t get discouraged if you’ve been eating healthy, exercising on a regular basis and your weight loss came to a stop. You’re plateauing. You can beat a weight loss plateau by making a few simple changes. Let’s start with your exercise program. If you’ve been using one of the DVD 30-minute programs for ages without increasing your reps or switching it with the other 30-minute program, that may be the source of your plateauing.
Add a little variety to the mix or make the workout harder.
While I love the fact you follow my routines so closely, you need to make some changes. The more you do a set of exercises the more efficient your body becomes at them. That means it doesn’t have to work as hard, which causes it to burn fewer calories. Switch between the two routines and push yourself a little harder by adding more repetitions to challenge you a bit. The more you workout, the better your fitness level and what was hard a month ago, is now far easier. If you want more variety, try streaming one of my other selections for more variety.
You may be building muscle tissue and losing fat tissue.
If you’re working out, you’re building muscle tissue. Muscle tissue weighs more per cubic inch than fat tissue does. That doesn’t mean you aren’t making progress. You may be losing inches. Think about it this way. Consider creating two containers. One would hold a pound of feathers perfectly, without squashing them. The other would hold a pound of iron perfectly with no room to spare. The one holding the pound of iron would be far smaller, since iron is denser. Muscle tissue is more dense than fat, so it takes up less space per pound, meaning that you’re probably losing inches and making great headway.
Your weight loss may be harder because you’ve lost weight.
Think about it. If you weighed 180 pounds and now weigh 150, it’s like no longer carrying around a 30 pound weight. You simply won’t burn as many calories. Of course, it’s easier to lose weight if you’re heavier. Those extra pounds you’re carrying add to the challenge. In order to shed more weight as you lose weight, you either have to work harder when you exercise or eat fewer calories.
- Don’t starve yourself. Your body compensates and slows metabolism to conserve calories. Instead, focus on healthy eating and if you’re eating a lot less, have a cheat day occasionally to keep your metabolism going strong. Just don’t overdo it.
- Maybe you’re not drinking enough water. If you dehydrate slightly or have too much salt, your body retains water to maintain the sodium level.
- Get more active, even when you’re not working out. Take the stairs or ride your bike to the store. Just keep moving.
- Don’t weigh yourself every day and find other benefits you’re experiencing besides just weight loss. Take a walk in nature, enjoy your new curvy body and enjoy your new energy.
